Stew Schmidt is a paramedic, healthcare leader, artist, father, and lifelong student of people and the experiences that shape them. Raised on a farm near Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Stew has spent much of his professional life working in emergency medical services, where he has served both on the front lines and in leadership roles.

His years in paramedicine have given him a unique view of life. He has witnessed people during moments of fear, loss, courage, kindness, and hope. Those experiences have taught him that some of life’s greatest lessons are found not in dramatic events, but in quiet conversations, ordinary moments, and the simple act of truly listening.

Stew’s interest in leadership and healthcare extends beyond the ambulance. He completed a Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management at Royal Roads University and continued his education through an MBA at the University of Alberta. Throughout his career, he has explored how compassion, leadership, community, and thoughtful decision-making can create stronger healthcare systems and better human connections.

Outside of healthcare, Stew is deeply connected to art and creativity. Painting, drawing, antler carving, and working with other materials give him another way to reflect, slow down, and express ideas that words cannot always capture.

Family, community, and personal growth remain at the heart of his life. His experiences as a son, brother, father, partner, caregiver, leader, artist, and paramedic have shaped the reflections found throughout The Quiet Siren.

Stew now calls Sylvan Lake, Alberta, home, where he continues to reflect on leadership, service, creativity, loss, resilience, and what it means to live with greater purpose and presence.

The Quiet Siren is his invitation to notice the lessons hidden within everyday life, to listen a little more closely, and, above all, not to leave the music within us unplayed.
